Victory! USA’s Fourth Largest Supermarket, Ahold USA, Joins Cage Egg Boycott

February 23, 2016

Our work to abolish the battery cage is seeing groundbreaking results. Following dialogue with The Humane League, Ahold USA, the fourth largest supermarket in America, has just announced that it will sell only cage-free shell eggs in its over 700 stores by 2022. Ahold USA owns major brands such as Stop & Shop and Giant.

With this commitment, Ahold becomes the first true grocer in the USA to produce a firm timeline to eliminate cages from their egg supply chain. The Humane League applauds Ahold's historic announcement, which brings the retail industry one huge step closer to a future without cages.

Virtually the entire American food service and packaged food industries have committed to phasing out cages from their supply chains. Now the nation's largest retailers are joining the cage boycott, with companies such as Ahold, Costco, Target, BJ's Wholesale Club, and CVS producing commitments to move away from cages. It is time for the remaining retailers, such as Walmart, Kroger, Safeway-Albertsons, and Publix, to follow suit and end their support of cruel cage confinement.

The Humane League is currently campaigning to see Kroger, the largest supermarket in the country, end its support of cages. Please visit Kroger's Facebook page and tell them to follow in Ahold's footsteps and produce a timeline to go cage-free.
