Victory! Family Dining Moves Away From Cages

IHOP, CRACKER BARREL, GOLDEN CORRAL JOIN THE CAGE EGG BOYCOTT
February 19, 2016

This week DineEquity (parent company of IHOP and Applebee's), Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, and Golden Corral became the most recent American restaurant chains to join the industry-wide shift away from cage egg farms. These commitments follow previous announcements from their peers and competitors Denny's, Bob Evans, and Black Bear Diner.

All of these restaurants are a part of what's known as the "Family Dining" segment of restaurants, whose menus tend to mimic the typical diet of America's heartland: heavy in meat, dairy, and lots of eggs. In total, commitments from these six restaurants alone account for billions of eggs, which translates to millions of egg laying hens that will no longer experience a lifetime of suffering confined to a cage no larger than a laptop screen. While some other major Family Dining companies, like Waffle House, Perkins, and Huddle House, have yet to get on board with this movement, it is clear that in order to stay competitive they will have to address this issue.

As more and more Americans are waking up to the realities of industrialized farming, they are demanding compassion for farmed animals. With virtually the entire food service and food manufacturing industries firmly committed to eliminating cages, it is now time for our nation's retailers to follow suite. While some major retailers have taken a stand against cages, like Costco, Target, BJ's Wholesale, Trader Joe's, and CVS, other giants of this industry, like, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, and Food Lion, have yet to address this issue.

Help us make this change happen: Call The Kroger Company at (513) 762-4996 and ask to speak to CEO Rodney McMullen. Kindly ask him to stop the caging of egg-laying hens in the Kroger supply chain.

Together we will end the use of these cruel devices.
